FDIC Data Updated on PolicyMap
With the government shutdown, you might think no new government data was released. But the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is an independent government corporation, similar to Amtrak or the U.S. Postal Service, and as such, it doesn’t get shut down if Congress doesn’t pass a budget.
So with the FDIC still open, we updated two of our banking-related point indicators: FDIC Bank Failures and Bank Branch Offices.
The FDIC Bank Failures shows where banks that are closed by the FDIC are located. Before 2007, such closures were rare, but since then, there have been closings every month. We update this list quarterly, so the dataset is current through September 2013.
The Bank Branch Offices indicator shows where bank branches are. All of them. The FDIC updates this every year, so this reflects all banks that existed around October 1st, 2013.
Both of these indicators can be found in the Add Sites section, in the Banking menu.
