What will happen to the House of Representatives?
by Katie Nelson
Every ten years, the population counts from the Census are used to redistribute the 435 seats in the House of Representatives among the states, as directed by the US Constitution.
The 2010 apportionment will be based on official numbers, which are delivered within 9 months of Census day – so by the end of December. But, using Claritas estimates available from PolicyMap we can certainly get a sense of what to expect; a reduction in Midwest seats and increases in swaths of the west, southwest, and southeast.

Interestingly enough, the map of population change since 2000 looks very similar to the reapportionment that happened back in 2000: http://www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/maps/files/map03.pdf.
