Guess the Indicator: Solution!

Last week, we showed you the map of a new indicator on PolicyMap, and gave hints to help you guess what it was. Here’s the map and hints, to refresh your memory:

Powered by www.policymap.com, an online mapping tool and data warehouse.

Hint 1:
This indicator measures the rate, not the absolute number.

Hint 2:
The notable areas of low concentration are in the southern states, and in Utah.

Hint 3:
Rhode Island has the top concentration among all states.

Hint 4:
Louisiana has a low concentration in it’s northern half…but a very high concentration in its southern half.

What indicator does this map show? Rate of adherence to the Catholic Church!

Religion data comes to us from the Glenmary Research Center and Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies. Some of the interesting aspects of this map, which I pointed out last week, is the large area of low concentration in the “Bible Belt” south, where Evangelical Protestantism is more prevalent. Another prominent area of low concentration is Utah and southern Idaho, where Mormonism is predominant.
