Uninsured Population from Small Area Health Insurance

There’s been lots of news lately about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the constitutionality of which is being challenged in the Supreme Court. The law’s aim is to provide everyone in the country access to health insurance. And where are the most people without insurance? Every year, the US Census releases its Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) which give an idea of where in the country people are most uninsured.

Clearly, the states that are challenging the law are not doing so because they already are well insured—the three states with the highest rates of people without insurance are all challenging the law: Texas, Florida, and Nevada, where between 24.5% and 26.3% of their citizens under age 65 don’t have health insurance.
